Every
day at this 4-day camp is a science expedition into the unknown and
over the week your child will do 40+ science activities, exciting
demonstrations, hands-on experiments, team games and fun quizzes.
Every Day includes: 4 indoor classroom-based
fun, hands-on, science sessions and 3 outdoor ‘Activity
Playground Breaks’
Disclaimer: Please note the order of the
Activity Week Programme is subject to change. Should you wish to confirm the
order of the Activity Week Programme at your camp venue; this will not be
available until 2 weeks before the start of the camps.
Day 1> Deep Science
We
travel down through the ocean zones and discover the mysteries of The Deep in
an ocean zone bottle. Next, we ‘meet’ an ocean apex predator, the great white
shark. We discover what makes them such a great predator and then examine their
food chain. Oil spills happen too frequently in our oceans, we learn how
difficult they are to clean up by completing an oil spill challenge. We also
look at the impact oil spills have on sea birds and see how difficult it is to
clean up oil-clogged feathers. We end the day by investigating different fluids
and making some Deep Sea Slime!
The Deep –
We investigate the different ocean zones and create an Ocean Zones bottle.
Jaws! – ‘Meet’
an ocean apex predator and make their food chain.
Beyond the Sea – Oil spills happen too frequently in our
oceans; we complete an oil spill challenge to see how difficult they are to clean
up.
Deep Sea Slime – What’s hiding in the depths of our Deep Sea
slime?
Day 2> Blow Me Away
The
wind moves at different speeds from a gentle breeze to a hurricane. We build an
anemometer to measure wind-speed. Then we try some tricky air pressure experiments
to show that even though you can’t see it, air has mass. We explore just how
powerful moving air can be and build a fan turbine. Finally, we investigate a
strange air pressure quirk, the Magnus effect, and see how spinning objects can
fly – even without wings!
Blow Wind, Blow – The wind moves at different speeds from a
gentle breeze, to a hurricane. We build an anemometer to measure wind speed.
Renewable Energy – I’m a
Big Fan – We look at powerful air and harness it
to power a mini turbine.
Flying without Wings – it’s not just things with wings that fly! We
make a spinning flyer from some unusual items.
The Fun Zone – We re-cap the activities with quizzes and
challenges designed to reinforce the day’s learning.
Day 3> Rainbow Research
We
learn about primary, secondary and tertiary colours and mix our own colour
wheel. We also set up a walking rainbow experiment. Next, we split visible
light into the rainbow spectrum by making a spectroscope. We look at various
types of prisms and see which give the best results. We carry out an experiment
to show that light travels in straight lines, and we try to reflect light all
around the room.
Mix It Up – We learn about primary, secondary and tertiary
colours by mixing our own colour wheel.
Rainbow Connection – We split visible light into the rainbow
spectrum by making a spectroscope.
Hall of Mirrors – Light travels in straight lines, but what if
you bounce it back? We reflect on what happens and make a mirror sculpture.
The Fun Zone – We re-cap the activities with quizzes and
challenges designed to reinforce the day’s learning.
Day 4> Weather Madness
We
take a look at the sky and discover there are many different types of clouds,
we make a cloud viewer and learn what different types of clouds mean for the
weather around us. We examine one of the more extreme weather systems and find
out what makes a tornado twist. Then we learn how rainfall is measured and make
our own rainwater gauge. We end with an explosive finale – a Mentos and diet
coke experiment.
Mr Blue Sky – There are many different types of clouds, we
make a cloud viewer so we can become meteorologists and forecast the weather!
Twister! – We find out what makes a tornado twist and make
our own tornado in a bottle!
Let It Rain – Will it be the driest summer on records? We
make a rainwater gauge to help us find out.
The Fun Zone – We re-cap the activities with quizzes and
challenges designed to reinforce the day’s learning. Finally, we end the week
with an explosive surprise!
Remember – Parents will also receive a TOP SECRET Handout that tells you:
- What They DID?
- What They LEARNT?
- Other cool science you can EXPLORE AT HOME?
